How do stealth destroyers work

US Navy sends world's largest stealth destroyer to sea

She is the largest destroyer in the world - and yet the USS Zumwalt is almost invisible. The ship is said to be barely detectable by enemy radar. But not only that is astounding, but also the price: three ships are said to cost at least $ 12 billion.

From a distance it looks like a roughly hewn concrete block floating lazily on the water. Almost 200 meters long, with a bow that sticks into the sea like a spear. A gray monster that could have come from a science fiction film. And whose commander is also called James Kirk. Exactly like the first in command on the Starship Enterprise.

Is the American Navy kidding? No, on the contrary: the USS Zumwalt, which has just set off on its maiden voyage, is a shining symbol of the future of the Navy. The ship is a destroyer that is equipped with a variety of weapon systems, and at the same time has many advantages of a cruiser, which is primarily used for reconnaissance and surveillance purposes.

Drive with 100,000 hp

The most important feature, however, is the external shape. On radar images, the huge ship, which has a displacement of more than 15,000 t, should appear like a small fishing boat that poses no danger. A mistake: the USS Zumwalt, named after an admiral in the Vietnam War, has 80 launch pads, four cannons of different types and four launch sites for helicopters or drones.

The gas turbine drive should develop a power of around 100,000 hp, a top speed of more than 30 knots is possible on the open sea. 158 men make up the standard crew of the destroyer.

The US Navy celebrates the qualities of the ship, which is designed, among other things, for coastal surveillance and attacks on targets on land, only in superlatives. The new series has three times the weaponry power of comparable ships and at the same time three times the defense against anti-ship missiles. In addition, there is an operation area ten times larger in shallow waters.

Doubts about the perfect camouflage

In the end, it all depends on how well the stealth-bomber-like camouflage actually works. Some weapons experts doubt the Navy’s predictions. And that would mean that the ships, each of which costs billions of dollars, could be destroyed with comparatively cheap and small weapons.

These doubts may also be a reason why the originally planned number of around 60 ships under the model name DDG 1000 has meanwhile more than decreased. In addition to the USS Zumwalt, two more are under construction. And this trio alone is said to cost around $ 12 billion. Or maybe 20.

The Americans may be the furthest when it comes to stealth ships, but they are not the only ones. The British are also working on ships of the future that cannot be detected by radar.
