Is the iCloud keychain as secure as LastPass
Icloud keychain vs lastpass: you should look for an alternative in 2021
Most people recycle their weak passwords whenever they want to log into a new location or when they need to change phones. In addition, they repeat the same passwords for all platforms and services.
The most common methods for a password are name, date of birth, or a combination of both. This is sure to be a recipe for an impending disaster. For this reason, investing in a password manager has become indispensable. By default, Apple offers the iCloud Keychain feature, which acts as an all-in-one password manager across the Apple ecosystem.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't look for alternatives. The App Store is filled with a variety of great third-party password managers. In addition, Apple has added an automatic login function for third-party password managers, which only makes them more powerful than Apple's standard solution.
In this post, we're going to be comparing the standard iCloud Keychain to one of the best options available on the market, LastPass.
The iCloud keychain is part of the iCloud functionality, which is included in the iOS package and takes up approximately 14 GB of storage space. LastPass uses approximately 140MB of storage space.
Download LastPass for iOS
As always, Apple has kept it simple with the standard user interface. Unlike other built-in apps, iCloud Keychain is not available as a separate app. It's a service that is embedded right into the Settings app.
Go to Settings> Passwords and Accounts> Websites and App Passwords to access the iCloud Keychain data.
From there, you can view the passwords and website / app names in alphabetical order.
The search bar is at the top with the "+" button and the editing function. You can jump to any website name using a quick scroll bar on the right.
LastPass adopts the iOS design guidelines with a bottom tab bar and a few options at the top.
By default, you get to the Vault area where the passwords are adjusted by section, e.g. B. Bank, Email ID, Finance, Booking Sites, Online Storage, Social Networking, etc. It's neat, but the top search function is the fastest way to find an item.
You can access various security options and the Settings menu from the bottom bar, while the top bar contains Safe Notes and a “Fill Out Form” option that allows you to add new items.

Adding a new item
As always, adding a new item is easy for both apps. In any app, tap the plus sign (+) and it'll reveal gaps that need to be filled in.
iCloud Keychain only offers areas for the website name, username and password to fill in.
LastPass offers custom options for populating websites, such as: B. e-mail, password, secure note, secure password generation, automatic login, and more.
iCloud Keychain data is stored in iCloud and comes with standard iCloud security measurements.
LastPass synchronizes and stores all data on its dedicated servers. The company suffered a major setback as a result of this practice. I wish they would allow consumers to store data on third-party cloud storage as well.
Both apps offer Face ID protection.
This is one of the most important things to consider when choosing a password manager. After all, you want to have access to all of the data on more than one device. In that regard, LastPass wins a mile over iCloud Keychain.
LastPass is available on every platform you can think of. It's available for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and the web and supports most browsers as an extension.
As usual, the story with iCloud Keychain fits in with any other Apple software, which means it is only available in the Apple ecosystem.
Firefox Lockbox vs. Chrome Password Manager: Which Native Password Manager Is Better?
With the introduction of iOS 12, Apple opened the auto-fill feature for third-party password managers.
By default, it's enabled for iCloud Keychain, but you can change it in the Settings app. Go to Settings> Password & Accounts> AutoFill> and select LastPass from the list.
Anywhere you visit a website or app login page, you will see a small prompt where you can add login information from the chosen password manager. All new credentials are added directly in the password manager.
The greatest highlight of the iCloud Keychain is its ease of use. You won't even notice the app adding information to the keychain and using it when necessary.
LastPass strikes back with advanced features like security screening that shows weak / repeated passwords, secure notes, password sharing, browser integration and more.
This is where things get interesting. The basic functionalities of LastPass remain free. The app costs $ 42 per year for premium features like password sharing and priority assistance.
ICloud Keychain is free to use, but the data you add is compared to 5GB of free iCloud storage. You can purchase the additional storage for just $ 1 per month.

Do you have to switch?
The answer here is simple. If you are heavily invested in Apple's ecosystem and have no intention of jumping anytime soon, iCloud Keychain is the way to go. LastPass impresses with its outstanding cross-platform functionality and extended options.
