Supports Motorola One Vision 4K videos

Motorola One Vision in hands on: A smartphone with a 48-megapixel camera for 300 euros

The One Vision has a dual camera with a main sensor that delivers a resolution of 48 megapixels and comes from Samsung. The entire camera technology has been optimized so that the best possible recordings can be made in a dark environment. There is a bright aperture of f / 1.7 and an optical image stabilizer. The camera always combines four pixels into one, resulting in a real resolution of 12 megapixels.

There is also a special night vision mode in order to be able to display as many details as possible in a night image recording. When trying it out, the results were satisfactory, and many details could be seen in a very darkened room. The manufacturer uses its own algorithm for this and does not use the night vision mode of the pixel smartphones.

The main sensor is complemented by a 5-megapixel camera, which allows a depth of field known from SLR cameras to be brought into the image. This is particularly useful when taking portraits. In this case, the camera app suggests a better image section if necessary; a second image is created in addition to the original photo. The optical image stabilizer can also be used for video recordings. Videos in 4K resolution with up to 30 fps are supported.

In the upper left corner of the display is the front camera, which has a resolution of 25 megapixels with an aperture of f / 2.0 and promises high-quality self-portraits. The camera can also combine four pixels into one pixel, then the resolution is reduced to 6 megapixels, but the light output improves accordingly and should ensure low-noise images. In addition, self-portraits can automatically be provided with a blurred background that is calculated using an algorithm.

6.3 inch touch screen

The One Vision has a 6.3-inch IPS touchscreen in 7: 3 format, which is specified by the manufacturer as 21: 9. The resolution is 2,520 x 1,080 pixels, so there is no excessively sharp representation here, but it is sufficient for the display size. The display is protected from scratches by means of Cornings Gorilla Glass. Despite the large display, the smartphone is hardly wider than a classic 5.5-inch device due to its narrow format. This enables one-handed operation.

There is a fingerprint sensor in the smartphone, which is located on the back. If you also use the smartphone in a car holder, it will be difficult to unlock the device using your fingerprint.

Samsung's Exynos 9609 processor, an octa-core processor with a clock rate of up to 2.2 GHz, works in the One Vision. It is the first non-Samsung smartphone in Europe with an Exynos processor. Since the beginning of 2018, there have been repeated suspicions that Samsung will also make its own processors available to partners. 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory are available to the user. There is also a slot for a micro SD card, which can be up to 512 GB in size. When trying it out, the device responded quickly to all inputs.

The One Vision runs with Android One, the manufacturer promises particularly fast Android updates, around two to three months after the Pixel devices, the Motorola smartphone will also receive updates. The smartphone is to receive the next two main versions of Android, i.e. in addition to Android Q and Android R. Security updates are to be made available by May 2022.

As with the other Motorola smartphones, there are software add-ons such as Moto Actions and Moto Display. This includes, among other things, typical Motorola gestures to immediately start the camera or activate the flashlight by moving the smartphone. In addition, notifications can be shown on the display by nudging the smartphone.

The LTE smartphone is dual SIM capable, but no memory card can be used with two SIM cards. It supports WLAN-ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and has a GPS receiver as well as an FM radio and a mono speaker. In addition to a USB-C connection, there is a 3.5 mm jack socket so that classic headphones can be operated with it. The smartphone is protected against water jets according to IP52.

There is a 3,500 mAh battery in the smartphone and the manufacturer promises that it should be possible to use it all day long without any problems. Using fast charging technology, the battery should provide 7 hours of usage after 15 minutes of charging.

Motorola plans to launch the One Vision smartphone at the end of May 2019 for 300 euros. Pre-orders are possible from May 16, 2019. The device is generally delivered with a quick charger, headphones and a protective cover.

Conclusion

The One Vision, which runs with Android One, has very good mid-range equipment. The smartphone will receive the next two main Android versions and should also get security patches quickly. The 48-megapixel camera sounds promising in this price range and the memory configuration is generous. The first experiences were positive, especially when taking pictures in dark surroundings.
