What affects our life the most

We don't even notice it anymore, but Facebook and Co determine our lives. We'll tell you why this is so and how it is expressed here.

We are always informed: About the fact that Max baked a cake and Jule has two new friends. That Florian is currently lying on the beach in Turkey. Oh yes, and Sophie and Lukas broke up - once again. We can contact people anytime, anywhere, and thanks to the Facebook news feed, we are well informed about other people's lives. And why? Because we are always online. In front of the television, in the waiting room, on the bus or at school, we reflexively reach for the smartphone. Social networks have a huge impact on our everyday lives.

Misunderstandings are inevitable

Have you ever had a fight with a boyfriend because you misunderstood a message from him or her? If you write to each other and don't talk to each other, that happens quickly. During a conversation, we automatically interpret the other person's body language: How did he mean that? Is she sad now? Does that make him happy? Is she mad at me now? Answering these questions when you can't see the other's face is not easy. "I'm not mad :-)", writes her best friend. But a smiling smiley is sent quickly. Who tells us that she doesn't sit crying in front of her smartphone and wants to be comforted? Misunderstandings are inevitable in our written conversations on social media. They influence our lives because they can, for example, trigger an argument with our best friend.

With fun to learning success - that's how it's done

My concentration is so short ... oh, look! A bird!

When we scroll through our Facebook or Twitter news feed, our eyes and brains absorb tons of new information in a matter of seconds. For things that we like, we like them. Things we don't care about are simply scrolled away. Our brain structures are constantly stimulated, say experts, because what we see and hear changes in a matter of seconds. Our brain gets used to it. Researchers found that this makes it harder for us to concentrate on one thing for a long time, e.g. reading a long text. Our attention span is decreasing. In order to process information properly, the brain needs breaks. That means: log out from time to time.

Social networks are addicting

When we ride the roller coaster, the stress hormone adrenaline is released. But did you know that this also happens when we use social networks? The body pours out adrenaline as soon as we have to react to a change. We are constantly exposed to changes through social networks - we constantly receive new information or have to react quickly to news. Every time there is an adrenaline rush from the body. It doesn't just mean that we are constantly tense. Adrenaline can be addicting - and Facebook and Co. with it too.

Finally, something good too

Now we know the negative effects of social media on our lives: They lead to misunderstandings, difficulty concentrating (by the way: have you really read the whole text?) And are addicting. But in the end you can say that they also have good sides: You get to know nice people who you might otherwise never have met. You can communicate with people you hardly ever see. Nevertheless, you should press the "Logout" button from time to time and allow yourself some rest.

In our article Social networks: Does Facebook make you sad? you read whether Facebook and Co can have an influence on our mood. And in our article Selfies - what they reveal about you will tell you what selfies reveal about themselves.
