Secret service

  • Degree of secrecy in Germany

Material classified as TOP SECRET, knowledge of which by unauthorized persons would endanger the existence of the Federal Republic of Germany or one of its countries.

Confidential material is classified as SECRET if its knowledge by unauthorized persons would endanger the security of the Federal Republic of Germany or one of its countries, cause serious damage to its interests or reputation, or would be of great advantage to a foreign state.

Material classified as CONFIDENTIAL is classified as material whose knowledge by unauthorized persons could be detrimental to the interests or the reputation of the Federal Republic of Germany or one of its countries or could be advantageous for a foreign country.

VS, which do not fall under the secrecy grades TOP SECRET, SECRET or VS-CONFIDENTIAL, but are not intended for the public, receive the secrecy grade VS-ONLY FOR SERVICE USE.

The labeling of classified material takes place with the corresponding application of the classified information instruction for the federal authorities.

  • Security check

A security check is the check of people who are to be entrusted with a security-sensitive activity. The following applies in principle: A security check cannot be carried out without the express consent of the person concerned.

Sensitive and confidential information is known as classified information (VS). These are all facts, objects or findings that must be kept secret in the interest of the public. It does not depend on the form of presentation, but only on the content.
