Novak Djokovic unintentionally meets a line judge at the US Open in frustration. The Serb is disqualified for this.

For Novak Djokovic, the US Open is over suddenly - and for a very special reason: Because he hits a line judge with a ball in frustration after losing a service, he is disqualified.

Djokovic did not use 3 set balls with the score of 5: 4, 40: 0 in the round of 16 against the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, then lost the serve for the first time at 5: 6 and, in frustration with the lost service game, sent a ball blindly backwards. With that, the world number 1 met a line judge.

This went down and gasped for air. Djokovic - visibly frightened - hurried to help. The linesman quickly recovered.

Already previously uncontrolled

The referees discussed with each other and with Djokovic for a while. But they had no choice but to disqualify the Serb. At all tennis tournaments in the world, players are immediately excluded for such offenses. Other top players such as the Argentine David Nalbandian or the Canadian Denis Shapovalov have also been hit at the top level.

Djokovic literally challenged the scandal against Carreno Busta on Sunday. A few minutes earlier, he had pounded a tennis ball wildly in the direction of a gang with officials sitting nearby. This bullet hit no one, he was still lucky. With the second offense he pushed the ball backwards much less rapidly, this time it was no longer good.

The clear tournament favorite is no longer there; Djokovic hasn't lost a game this year. Now the Serb is not only losing his round of 16 game. The US Open announced that all of his world ranking points earned in New York in 2020 will also be canceled and all of his prize money will be converted into a fine. The Serb apologized in a statement on social media on Monday night.

It is also clear that a new Grand Slam tournament winner will be chosen at the US Open. All previous major winners were eliminated or missing from the New York bubble.

He didn't behave uncontrollably at all - on the contrary. Very confident. The lady who hit the ball was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The tennis player completely correct.

If he had behaved correctly, he would not have been disqualified .. so much for that!

Definitely not a fan of Nole. Yes, he made a mistake and pays a heavy price for it. It was unintentional, inappropriate, and not his first mistake.
BUT: All the malice and ridicule here are really worrying. And please stop all that GOAT stuff. It's frustrating!
A little tip, by the way: If you see the same facts in another person completely different, then you are not factual.

I'm not a Nole fan, but this bashing is unspeakable. Then the GOAT discussion immediately past the topic .. yawn. Nole screwed up in the heat of the moment and was disqualified for it. The right decision and compliant with the rules. Measure with cubits of equal length. Fedi wasn't in control earlier either and think about how McEnroe is idolized as a former enfant terrible today. The only thing I chalk at Nole is that he didn't comment on the PR.
