Home lifts in your own home: This is how mini-elevators work

You would certainly like to live independently in your own four walls as long as possible. Not so easy when your legs no longer participate, whether due to illness or age. In addition to the well-known stairlift, one solution is increasingly the installation of a home lift, also known as a lightweight construction lift. A platform lift could be an alternative for wheelchair users or if more than one floor has to be overcome.

Home lifts do not need a shaft and only little space

Lightweight construction lifts for the home consist of two rails and a transport cabin equipped with a drive. Thanks to the self-supporting construction, these mini-elevators can do without the shaft and pit of their conventional colleagues. This saves space and costs, so that this type of vertical lift is particularly suitable for private households. Household electricity is sufficient to operate the cable pull system.

The smallest of these lightweight construction lifts require less than 0.8 square meters of floor space and can be installed relatively quickly. Whether you install the system in the hallway or in the living room is up to your taste. A lightweight construction lift can be ideally installed in the eye of the stairwell or on a gallery, but also in two rooms.

A ceiling breakthrough is necessary for this. In advance you have to have the statics of your house checked. However, due to the small footprint, the mini-elevators can only transport one person, shopping or suitcases.

A platform elevator offers more space

If you want to go upstairs with a wheelchair or stroller, a platform elevator with spindle drive will take you there. This travels in its own self-supporting steel shaft and, in contrast to its little brother, the lightweight construction lift, overcomes more than one floor. Since the drive technology is in the shaft, this elevator does not require any extra machine room either.

In order for you as a wheelchair user to be able to use the lift, the DIN 18040-2 lift requires a load capacity of 630 kilograms, a door width of at least 90 centimeters, a car width of 110 and a depth of 140 centimeters. In private residential construction, the legislature also allows vertical elevators up to 450 kilograms. An expert, mostly from TÜV or Dekra, must approve the installation of the lift from a travel height of three meters. In most cases this will be organized for you by the assembly company.

Carefully plan the home lift installation

You don't buy a mini-elevator off the shelf. Detailed advice is therefore essential. Serious providers come to your home and take the measurements here. They will also arrange an architect for you if the installation of the lift requires a building permit.

What does a home lift cost?

The retrofittable elevators for the home have their price. It starts at 18,000 euros for a one-person lightweight elevator with a travel height of one floor. Depending on the equipment and height, the costs are up to 40,000 euros.

You shouldn't forget the costs for maintenance and service. This adds up to around 200 to 300 euros a year. Good service that is quickly available on call day and night, on weekends and on public holidays is worthwhile.

Funding for the mini-elevator

But the costly simplification of everyday life is supported: The long-term care insurance pays a subsidy of up to 4,000 euros if the need for care is recognized. If you are dependent on a lift due to an occupational or traffic accident, you should contact your professional association or liability insurance company.
